In this episode, I'm talking about visibility and what it really costs you to stay invisible in your business, career and life. Because visibility isn't just posting on social media or being the loudest person in the room. It's choosing to be seen, heard and known for what you do.

I'm sharing a conversation from a recent coaching call that sparked this entire episode, my own very messy journey of learning to show up on camera, and why waiting until you feel confident, polished or "ready" is one of the fastest ways to stay exactly where you are.

Because you don't get to your dream by watching other people and waiting until you're ready.

You get there by doing.

This episode is for you if...

You've been holding yourself back because you're scared of getting it wrong, being judged or looking like you don't know what you're doing. Whether you're building a business, growing your personal brand, going for a promotion or simply know it's time to put yourself out there, this episode is your reminder to stop waiting for perfect and start showing up.

In this episode, we talk about:

• The coaching conversation that inspired this episode

• What visibility actually means beyond social media

• How visibility looks different in business, corporate, leadership and everyday life

• Why staying invisible always has a cost

• The deeper fear behind being seen and heard

• Why nobody has it all figured out — even the people you admire

• The difference between people who move forward and people who stay stuck

• Why you have to tell people you're the obvious choice

• How visibility communicates your intentions to the world

• Why I thought my 19-year career and résumé would speak for itself

• The social media strategist who forced me to start showing my face online

• My first terrifying experience talking to camera

• Why English being my second language made visibility even harder for me

• The criticism I received when I first started showing up online

• Why repetition — not confidence — is what made showing up easier

• How to start again when you've lost momentum or gone quiet

• Why imperfect action is the only way forward

Everyone you admire who seems to have it all figured out, you know, the people that you watch secretly on your phone, and you're like, oh gosh, it's just she has it all together. It's inspired by a coaching call I had this week. If you didn't know, one of my other arms of my business is coaching other personal stylists and something that I'm really passionate about. And I coach them to build their businesses, attract the right clients, and obviously make money. And I had a great conversation this week with one of my coaching clients, another stylist. We got into this topic of visibility, and we were talking about using social media for marketing, showing up and talking on camera. And she said to me, Look, I just don't want to look like I don't know what I'm talking about. And it made me so sad because this person has so much experience. And I know so many of you will relate to this: that fear of, oh God, everyone is looking at me. What if they think, you know, who does she think she is? What if I say the wrong thing? What if I press the wrong button? And I thought, you know what, this needs to be a podcast episode because visibility isn't just about what you wear. Visibility is choosing to be seen, to be heard. And yes, what you wear can be an armor. Absolutely. It plays a huge role in giving you the confidence to step up and be heard. But today I want to look at visibility from a different lens. First, I just want to clear something up because when people hear the word visibility, they think, oh, she means some posting on social media. Yep, that's that's that's being visible. She means being loud. Okay, that's that's not what I mean. Visibility simply means being seen. And it will look very different depending on where you are at in life. Whether you're in corporate, whether you're in a nine to five, whether you're building a business from ground up or you're a head of a Fortune 500 company, visibility will look different. If you're in a nine to five, visibility might mean being seen by your head of department, making sure that people above you know that you're doing great work, that you deserve a pay rise. And when that next opportunity comes up, you're the obvious one. If you're building a personal brand business, visibility might mean getting your face out there, showing up on social media, getting on podcasts, getting on stage, telling your audience what you do and why they should choose you. If you're a CEO or an executive, visibility might mean walking into a room and commanding it, looking the part, being the person in the room that people gravitate to. And visibility isn't just in a professional setting. It shows up in everyday life. It shows up in dating, putting yourself out there to attract the right partner. In your family, for example, it shows up when you want to put your hand up to say something that needs to be said. Setting people straight, having the conversations you've been avoiding in your friendships, for example, showing up as the full version of yourself instead of the filtered version. Visibility can look like so many different things. But here's what's true across all of them. Staying invisible always has a cost. The cost is if you don't show up, if you don't be visible, the thing you desire, the goal, the dream, the promotion, the life partner will never come to life. You can dream all you like, but visibility is the action that makes the dream real. And that fear we all feel, right? I feel it too. This is a message to me too. The fear isn't just about pressing the wrong button on camera or saying something that sounds off or not saying things perfectly. The fear is deeper than that. It's the voice that sits on your shoulder and says things like, Who do you think you are? You know, what if what if people judge me? What if I put myself out there and people see that I'm not perfect? And here's what I want to tell you right now, my friend. No one has it figured out. No one. The business coaches I've paid tens of thousands to work with, they don't have it figured out. The person you follow online who seems completely polished and confident, like they've got their business figured out and it's all sorted, they're also trying to figure it out. They're also putting themselves out there scared, but they're doing it anyway because they know that staying invisible isn't an option if they want to move forward, if they want to get their goal that they want. Everyone in this world is doing the things they need to do whilst also being scared of being seen because they understand something important. In order to be the obvious choice, you have to tell people you're the obvious choice. And visibility is how you do that. When you show up on social media, you're saying, my intention is to be the go-to person in my space. When you put up your hand in a meeting, you're saying, I have something worth hearing. When you walk into a room looking the part, you're saying, I belong here. And if someone comments on your outfit and says, Oh my gosh, you look amazing, great. Turn around and say, thank you so much. My intention is to get that promotion one day. And this is one way of being seen and being heard. Tell people what you're going for. Don't wait for them to figure it out. Visibility is you telling the world your intentions. When I pivoted to personal brain styling and relaunched my business, I thought my resume would do the talking for me. Ex-Fashion editor, head stylist at a TV network, nearly two decades of experience, I thought, yeah, okay, people are just gonna want to work with me, you know? And I quickly realized that is not how the world works. The world is full of noise. And in order for people to know, like, and trust you, they need to see your face. They need to hear your voice. So when I was rebranding, I hired a social media strategist. She cost me an arm and a leg and she forced me on camera. And she said to me, Look, we can post all the pretty pictures, but if people can't see your face and hear what you sound like, they will never buy. So I started with small steps. Instagram stories, I would post little quick things and sharing my thought. And then I progressed into short videos and then longer form videos. And now, look at me now. Look at me now. Five years later, here I am recording a podcast, jumping on stories without a second thought. I'm pressing that record button on my camera and it's become a habit. But it took raps. It took showing up imperfectly over and over again until I figured out how I wanted to sound, how I wanted to show up and what felt like me. And I remember the first time I had to do a face-to-camera. I'm not kidding you. I cried my eyes out because I was so in my head. Because if you didn't know, English is my second language. So usually when I say things, I'll say things back to front. Or I'll jumble up my words, I don't pronunciate things properly. And I remember my very first Instagram stories of me talking to the camera, I would get critiqued by family members saying, well, you shouldn't say um because it seems like you're not confident. I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm not a TV presenter. I'm just trying to tell people my message. And so all these things were coming at me, and I'm so glad I didn't listen and I kept going because now I look at where I'm at now and how I'm showing up, and those people won't be able to do half the stuff I'm doing right now. So here's my reminder to you, my friend. You don't get to your dream by watching other people and waiting until you're ready. You get there by doing. So if you're in that stage right now, early in your business, you're trying to build visibility, you're terrified to press the record button, just start. Start messy, start imperfect because it's in the doing that the learning comes. And if you're in a nine to five job and you feel like you deserve a pay rise and a promotion, step up. Book that meeting with your team leader. Tell them your intentions. And if you fall off because life gets in the way and you go quiet for a few months and your confident takes a hit and you lose momentum, that's okay, my friend. Just get back on, write yourself that post-it note, commit to the next 10 days, the next 30 days. I'm gonna show up, I'm gonna be visible, my business needs this from me, my career needs this from me. Because you're not going to get where you want to go by sitting back and watching everyone else and waiting for those opportunities to land in your lap. That's not how this world works. You dream it, then you do the work and you make it real. The more you stay down, the more you stay hidden, the more you'll stay exactly where you are, not moving forward, not achieving your dream, whatever that looks like for you. So here's what I want to leave with you today. Visibility doesn't mean being perfect. It doesn't mean having all the answers. It doesn't mean being the loudest person in the room. It means being seen in whatever way that looks like for you right now, in this season of life, in your career, in your business, in your relationships, in the rooms you want to be in. And the cost of staying invisible is the opportunities you don't get, the promotion that goes to someone else, the clients who choose someone else less deserving than you, the partner you never meet because you're still waiting for the perfect person to show up out of thin air. Fight for your dreams by being visible. Don't stay down. Get back on, do it imperfectly and do it anyway. If this episode resonated with you, I'd love to hear from you.
