This episode was originally recorded as a QA on my Instagram. I had a question from a lovely follower who asked, How do I level up my wardrobe on a tight budget? Firstly, I want to make myself very clear because I think this is where a lot of people get it wrong. A tight budget does not mean cheap. When most people say, I'm on a budget or they hear I'm on a budget, they immediately think, okay, so fast fashion, let's go to Zara, Sheen, HM. Don't get me started on Sheen. Friggin' hate that brand. Anyways, people think whatever's the cheapest, that's me, I'm on a budget. And look, there's nothing wrong with shopping at Zara. I shop at Zara. But a tight budget is not about buying the cheapest thing you can find. It's about being intentional. It's about knowing exactly what you need, knowing exactly where to look, and investing what you do have in terms of a budget into pieces that actually work. Pieces that last, pieces that elevate you, and pieces that are genuinely good quality. And let me tell you, my friend, you can build an incredibly elevated wardrobe on a tight budget. You just need to know how. As per podcast episode, I love a good structure. So today we're covering three points. And the points I'm covering in this podcast are the things that I do with my one-on-one clients. So let me tell you, I'm teaching from experience and I'm also teaching from doing. I'm doing this every single day when I'm shopping for my clients, and I know exactly how to take a budget, whether it's $10,000, $20,000, $30,000. Sometimes my clients have $5,000 to spend a season. I take that budget and I work that budget to the max. And in this podcast, I'm telling you exactly how I do that. Okay. So point one, let's get into it. Know your signature style before you spend a single dollar. You need to have a North Star. Before we talk about money, I need you to hear this. It's the it is the foundation of everything you do in your wardrobe. You cannot build a wardrobe on a budget or any wardrobe if you don't know your signature style first or your personal style first. Honestly, the words signature style and personal style, they're just the same thing. Don't confuse yourself, okay? Your personality is your personal style. Your signature style is your the thing that makes you unique. It is basically the same thing. Just let's just roll with that, okay? For the sake of this podcast, let's just roll with that. So before you start buying furniture, choosing paint colors, picking out tiles, you need a vision, a blueprint that you can go by, right? Because you're not gonna build a house blind. So if you're building a house, you're gonna sit with your architect and your interior designer, and they're gonna ask you, what do you actually want this house to look like? And if you're like me, and if you're in my community, you're probably like me, you're gonna spend hours on Pinterest scrolling and saving endless images. You're gonna go on Pinterest, go on Instagram, you're gonna Google, you're gonna save some images that communicate what it is that you like. And that's the starting point in which the designer and the architect can bounce off and they can take it and make it even better, but they need to know what's going on in your mind. Your wardrobe works exactly the same way. You need a set of images, a visual reference of your aesthetic, your personal brand, the vibe that you're going for, what your style actually looks like. See how I said your style, okay, what your style actually looks like. And here's a tip for you when you have these images nailed, print them out and keep them at the back of your wardrobe. You can keep them on your phone for reference when you're shopping, but I highly recommend that you have these images at the back of your wardrobe so you see it every time you're getting dressed. And I know some of you are thinking, Jane, what about body shape? Shouldn't I know my body shape first? Yes, you should. Absolutely. That is helpful, but it's not the first thing I would recommend that you do. My recommendation would be know your signature style, your personal style first before you worry about how to dress for your body shape. And let me tell you why. Because if you lead with body shapes rules first, you end up in a cage. And I've seen this so many times, and women follow rules to a T and they end up saying things like, Oh, I can't wear pleats, oh no, no, no, my shirt's got to be tucked in this exact same way. When you start dressing from that place, it's a place of restriction instead of creativity. And style is birth in creativity, it's your personality coming out in your clothes. So when you know your style first, you start from a place of personality and identity. What do you actually like? What colors feel like you? What details make you feel like yourself? What textures do you like? That's the foundation your wardrobe is built on. When you know your signature style, you stop buying random things that seems like a good idea in the store. We've all done that, right? I've I've done that as well. We've all done that. You stop wasting money on things that end up sitting in your wardrobe, tags still on them years later. Okay, every dollar you spend goes towards something that actually fits the bigger picture. That's not just style, that's financial strategy right there. Point two, set your budget, then shop with a strategy. Okay, so now you know your style, you've got your blueprint. Now we get into the actual how. First, set yourself a budget. Let's say it's a yearly number, it could be $1,000, it could be $5,000, it could be $10,000, whatever's realistic for you. There's no wrong number. Then you're gonna break it down into smaller chunks. I always recommend working in 90-day sprints, so every quarter. So if your yearly budget is $1,000, then that's $250 every three months you're going to spend in your wardrobe. And here's the key: you should already have a list of missing pieces in your wardrobe, a running list in your notes app of exactly what's missing from your wardrobe. Because then you know your signature style, you know exactly what gaps you're filling. You're not just shopping, you're shopping with a mission. And that's how I shop for my clients. I'm not randomly just going to shops and picking stuff up. There's a strategy in mind. Now, that strategy is made up a whole lot of things. What I'm telling you in this podcast episode makes up 50% of that strategy. Now, once you've got your budget and your list, this is where it gets to be fun. You're going to go shop during sale season. Shopping with a strategy. You're going to sign up to newsletters of the biggest department stores in your area. So Nordstrom, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, David Jones, if you're in Australia or New Zealand, these stores run on a calendar. So they've got Black Friday sales, they've got end-of-season sale, they've got end of financial year sale, boxing day, mid-year sale. There's always sales. If you know when those are going to come along, you can time your purchases and get good quality elevated pieces for a fraction of the price. Again, this is what I do for my clients. And if you want to go even further, shop consignments. Because you can build a high-quality wardrobe on a budget. You can get some genuine luxury pieces, beautiful condition, next level quality for so much less than retail. Okay, so find a consignment seller you trust, tell them exactly what you're after, the bag, the style, the details, and ask them to keep you in mind. There is no shame in telling someone I'm saving towards this, I'm not buying it today. But when the right piece comes in, please let me know. This is my goal. That's not embarrassing, that's smart shopping. And this is exactly the kind of strategic thinking I teach inside my paid community, my workshops, my digital products. Because building a high-quality wardrobe isn't about spending more. It's about spending with intention and knowing exactly where to look and how to divvy up your budget so that it can give you back a lot more. All right, so point three, we're almost at the end. Use what you already have, my friend, and let go of the things that are not working in your wardrobe. So before you buy anything new, get creative with what's already in your wardrobe. Sometimes when I work with clients and they tell me, oh my gosh, I just want to like throw everything out and start from scratch. And I'm like, no way, let's not do that. Let's have a proper feeding first. Let's find out your style, because I bet you that there's some gems in there that I can reuse, restyle with new pieces. Okay, it's not just about throwing everything out and starting from scratch. First, you've got to get creative in your wardrobe. Pull out your mood board with the images that show your signature style and really dissect them. If the inspiration image has a red blazer and you've got a green one, wear the green one. If the model in the picture is wearing a pair of red flats and you've got a black pair, use the black. You have to train yourself to look at inspiration and translate it with what's already in your wardrobe, instead of thinking, oh my god, I've got to go out and buy something new. And as you're doing that, keep adding to your missing pieces list because you're going to keep finding gaps. And that's exactly when point two kicks back in. And sell what's not working in your wardrobe. If you've got outdated pieces, if you've got things in your wardrobe with tags still on, because you bought them on impulse and they never actually suited you, move them on. Sell them. Someone out there is looking for exactly that piece. There's so many people out there that love vintage. People who repurpose older pieces and make them their own. Your unworn mistake could be exactly what someone else has been searching for. And when you sell your unwanted pieces, that money goes straight back in your wardrobe fund. It becomes this like little self-sustaining cycle in your wardrobe. Sell what doesn't work, reinvest in what does. It's like a tiny shopping bank account that just keeps replenishing itself. It's very, very cool. All right, so let's bring it all together. Know your signature style first. That's your blueprint. And it stops wasting you money on the things that don't actually work or belong in your wardrobe. Set a clear budget and shop with a strategy. Take advantage of sales season, consignment, know when the timings are of those sales. Okay, so you're investing in quality, not just buying cheap. And use what you already have while selling what isn't working. So your wardrobe is constantly working for you. A tight budget does not mean a cheap budget, my friend. It means a smart one.
